“The Rocket Action Car:” 1965 Oldsmobile F-85

Apparently Oldsmobile had considered naming the F-85 “Starfire,” but that didn’t fit the slightly smaller stature of the F-85 in their minds. “Rockette” was an option, but was rejected because of its association with the Radio City Music Hall performers. “85” was ultimately chosen, to differentiate the car from the larger “88”s.
They seem in this ad to be attempting to appeal to the sporty but slightly older and perhaps more cost-conscious crowd.
Here is a glimpse of what the consensus seems to say is an Olds 1965 F-85 Deluxe, used as a police car in the movie “Silence of the Lambs” (courtesy IMCDB).
And here is a commercial for the previous year’s Oldsmobile F-85 Cutlass. “Roomier and sportier,” it was certainly where the action was.
